What is Malware?

These spread between systems automatically via flash drives, CDROMs etc that are shared with other computer systems. When the drive is inserted, the virus is transferred automatically, often with no input from the user. They can remain dormant for a long time until triggered. Access can be stopped by anti-virus software that automatically scans external devices on connection/insertion.

Worms

These travel through network (wired or wireless) connections. They spread very quickly and can be prevented by an active firewall.

Trojans

Like the mythological horse, the Trojan Horse pretends to be something that the user accepts; a solution to a non-existent threat or problem, or access to free software, such as a photo editor, or music file; but they all have a penalty for opening them and often open communication with criminals who mine data, or hack into systems to obtain bank details, passwords, contact lists etc.

Trojans are the most prevalent cause of hacking and other remote, computer-based criminal activity. They spread through internet connections on contaminated websites or email and can be prevented by good email housekeeping (not opening files that you’re not expecting or don’t recognise) and safe surfing with an in-browser security tool (such as AVG Security Toolbar) that will warn the user of unsafe sites and prevent hidden downloads.

These files can spy on your activity, cloning contact lists and passwords and transmitting them online to a criminal recipient.

http://www.eicar.org has a tool that will harmlessly test your system by downloading harmless test files that imitate the effect of malware. Read their disclaimer first!!

Removal

Many IT specialists will format the hard disk drive, or perform a full system reset to factory settings when faced with an active virus infection that impedes access to normal functions, such as starting your anti-virus software, or file manager. This method will remove most infections, but the user will lose all data and programmes that were not supplied from the factory. Mach4 Computer Services only use these methods as an absolute last resort and, in over 95% of virus removal cases, have restored the system to pre-infection status, with the retention of almost all of the user's precious files, documents and photographs, music downloads etc. Any ineffective old virus protection is then removed and more effective protection installed with the customer's approval.
